Comments: You were and still are an inspiration to those in this craft. Your story of rags to riches has inspired many, including myself.
Your work will live on forever and you will be missed. I thank you for sharing with the world your stories. I first read your book in 1993 and I have every book since then. My only regret is never getting to meet you in person.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends. You will be missed. May you rest in peace.
Comments: When I began reading for pleasure again in my 20's a dear friend of mine gave me Invisible Life to read. I was soon hooked to reading and fell in love with his books! I went out and purchased every last book that E. Lynn Harris had out at that time. Through the discussions that I had with this same friend, mainly discussing his books, we eventually ended up creating a book club in my hometown.
Thank you so much for sharing your passion with us. I didn't personally know you but I'm glad that I knew of you and appreciate you for what you've given to all of us.
You will never be forgotten. I pray that your family and friends will be able to remember the good times and each day that passes that their grief will lessen. We will all miss you terribly! TaNisha

THANK YOU E LYNN!! Often ones talent is not for their own glory but for the glory and inspiration to higher ideas and human expression. Your Talent exemplified courage and I am sure many are better people because of your actions. Your Job is WELL DONE and this TRUTH shall not pass, yet will continue to inspire because you embraced your calling and that is really what this life is about. RIP my Brother.

Comments: I had the pleasure of meeting E. Lynn some years back at the Harlem Book Fair. I was so excited, words can not describe. If you ever attended the HBF you will know that it is always HOT!!! This day, I did not care one bit. I was first in that line and I wasn't going anywhere. My friends laughed and teased me. They said I should go to the back of the line because once I meet him, I would faint and no one else will have the chance to see him. So, E. Lynn arrived in all his coolness. Remember, it was HOT but you could not tell by looking at him, he was that cool and smooth. He asked my name, I told him, then I cried like a big ole baby (wish you could see the pictures)! He asked "Why are you crying Faye?". I told him because I love you and I think that was all I could get out.
E. Lynn you would be greatly missed!!! ***I'm still crying like a baby***
At this very moment, I don't know how to put all of the different emotions that I feel into perspective, so I'll say what comes natural. I love you and your works of art and you will be sorely missed. you were an extraordinary person and a master author now wearing the title known as 'God's Angel'. You've earned that title sweetheart.
When you asked your facebook family to lift you up in prayer for your trip to Hollywood, I never imagined that you would be lifted up this high, this soon. I smiled as I read your last entry on facebook where you typed: 'got the suit on and the new scent and I'm ready for my close up'.
Your close up...
As I know you met with a powerful lady in Hollywood , your final destination was with a Higher Power in Heaven. Our Father needed you and He claimed what was His as you were never ours to keep. The prayers in my heart are showered onto your family, friends and fans.
May your soul rest in peace my darling, E Lynn Harris.

Comments: To the memory of a man who worked hard to help individuals free themselves and find redemption. Through your writing people were able to find a bright light in darkness. Thank you so much. You legacy will live on.
OK FB family send prayers up. I'm off to my meeting with one of Hollywood's most powerful ladies. Got the suit on and the new scent I purchase yesterday and I'm ready for my close up. on Thursday

His "close up" - - - how precious is that? I don't know the details, I just know he got sick a few days ago enroute to LA and then died last night in LA and was brought to Cedars-Sinai. All I know is that the last exchange we had was a text message and I prayed with him. Before yesterday, we talked on July 4th when Steve McNair was found shot to death.
When I was 7 months pregnant with my daughter Brooklyn, we were in NYC together (July, 2003) and there are some great photos of him with his hands on my belly. Over the past few years he would ask me to give Brooklyn hugs and kisses for him and he referred to her as "the next Halle Berry" and we joked about her becoming as big as Beyonce. A year before I got pregnant with Brooklyn we were in NYC at the same time, October 2002, and he and a friend of his took me to the Hudson Hotel where I had the best meatloaf and whipped potatoes and he plate poached off me.
We became friends when I lived in Raleigh, NC in 1996. I miss him so.
~~~~~~~~~~~ Yesterday, just a few hours before he died, we were texting and I typed out this prayer for him:
Let's Pray God in heaven, We just come to you on this day, a day YOU made, and we simply say "thank you" for all that is and all that is yet to come. We are humbled by the gifts YOU have seen fit to bless us with. Thank you for being The Alpha and The Omega and EVERYTHING in between.... Read More
We lift Lynn up to you today. May you measure his breath and keep his mind focused. We ask for a spirit of discernment when it comes to deals and contracts. We ask for blessings for everyone associated with this meeting.
Jesus, give us THIS day our daily bread. Not enough bread for the upcoming week, next month or the rest of this year.
We love you, Lord. Amen. Amen. Amen.
Love you, e.
I am so humbled that was my last exchange with Lynn. God, I am so sad.
I am in awe. I am numb right now and in tears. There are NO words to describe what I am feeling right now. I am still trying to heal from the sudden death of Michael Jackson and to learn that E Lynn Harris had passed. At first, I was in disbelief until I had some friends contacted me and even then I could not believe it. He was and will always be my favorite author. I met him on several occasions and book signings when I lived in Baltimore and he was not only nice but very humble. He even took a photo with me which later co-workers thought he was my boyfriend My heart goes out to his son and the rest of his family. He will surely be missed. Rest In Peace!!!!!!
I am very heartbroken today about the passing of E. Lynn. I have been a fan of E. Lynn since Invisible Life. The last time I saw him was February 2009 at Barnes and Noble in Dallas, I am going to miss him.
I never knew him personally but felt like I did because of the great work that he's produced. He will be greatly missed. No one could write about the things that he wrote about as well as he did. R.I.P Mr. Harris!
Comments: Sometimes the heavens places an angel in our midst, one who can touch lives, capture our attention and breakaway stereotypes with the stroke of a pen. . . then all too soon that angel is gone, whisked back up to heaven. His time here on earth, completed! All we can do is remember and bask in the glory of having known him.
I never personally knew E. Lynn Harris; I always admired him from afar. He was always an inspiration to me. . . he made me realize that I too could be great and do wonderful things. From the stories his friends and peers have shared, E.Lynn lived up to the message, "To whom much is given, much is expected." And. . . he did it all with such humbleness and a smile. Truly a class act!
Rest in peace. Not only will the literary world miss you, but all the lives you touched with your gracious nature.
RIP E.Lynn you brought sweet guilty thrills that left people begging for more! You also stimulated a dialog about the complicated issues of identity, class, sexuality, friendship, and intimacy that our community so desperately needed, something we hadn’t seen since James Baldwin. And for that I say well done, now take your rest!
Comments: I am deeply saddened by the passing of a generous and gracious man who instilled in me, and countless others, the courage and strength to write "our own" stories. Whether you were a best selling author or a relative unknown, he extended a word and a hug. I've benefited tremendously from his wisdom and will continue to cherish his work and his legacy. Thank You E. Lynn Harris. May you rest in Peace and I pray that God sends the Comforter to your family, friends and fans.
It was just yesterday that I looked at a post on facebook and saw pictures of E. Lynn signing books at a book signing. I immediately thought...what an inspiration he was to me and his smile displayed just how much he enjoyed what he did! Of course, I had no idea that less than several hours later, I'd have to say goodbye to someone who gave so much to African American literature. There is no doubt in my mind that he was a wonderful man who definitely left us too, too soon. You will be missed!
Comments: I am overwhelmed with grief right now with the devastating news of one of my favorite authors. I am so sorry for the loss of a great author and person... and one of my favorite authors. I never got the opportunity to meet with him personally but when I found out that he was on facebook, I immediately sent him an email and we dialogued back and forth. I joked with him about him actually responding back to me and how I was going to print his email replies and tape them to all of my books that he wrote. I am so sad and to make things worse, he was going to put us "Down South" in Nashville, Tn on the map for one of his tours. I can't believe it.
I have been thinking and pondering a name for my new book club that I am starting next month, now I have part of the name(E.Lynn Harris). Just trying to figure out how to word it. Do you have any suggestions?
Comments: I always enjoyed reading E. Lynn's books and thought of him as being very courageous for addressing "the elephant in the room." Who knows how many readers' lives have been saved by unsuspecting women who may have otherwise have unprotected sex. His transition was way too soon and the Black community has lost a brave, proud brother who told the told. Rest in peace this next chapter of your legacy will also be da bomb! Much love.
This brother was truly a master at his craft. His works and his words moved me. His characters were real. He could open a book like no other. Although I did not know him personally, I knew him through his work. He inspired me to write better. He brought light to issues within our community and made everyone relate to those issues on a more personable and human scale. I am shocked at his passing, and I celebrate his talent, his courage, and his humanity. My heartfelt prayers go out to his family, friends, and fans. Rest in Peace Brother Harris, your works will continue to be cherished, and I thank God for sharing you with us for the time He allowed us to have you.
